Lawrence R. Lemmon Passes Away December 27 2011

Lawrence Lemmon was an avid collector. He not only collected items, but made elaborate displays for the Lost River Museum in Mackay, Idaho. He loved sharing his work with others and we loved that he shared!

Mackay Idaho's Mine Hill Tour Stop #1: Shay Blacksmith Shop December 29 2011

The Mine Hill Preservation Committee chaired by Earl Lockie has been hard at work stabilizing the former Empire Mine Blacksmith Shop just above the Big Lost River at the former smelter site.  This is the first stop on the Mine Hill Tour (FREE and self-guided with interpretative signs). Mine Hill Tour maps are available at Mackay City Hall, Sammy's, Chevron, and many merchants in town - so, stop by for the map before heading up the Mine Hill.
Very unusual to have no snow on the ground at this time of year, December 29 2011
Mining equipment displays inside the blacksmith shop.
Same location in around 1908. The original blacksmith shop burned and was rebuilt without the cupola.

Big Lost River Flows to the INL in November 2011

Late-season flows in the Big Lost River: Not since 1999, has the Big Lost River flowed onto the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) during November. Because of an above average precipitation event this October and an above average 2011 water year, fall flow occurred again in the river—which is an important source of recharge for the eastern Snake River Plain aquifer.

Blast from the Past - History of the Mackay Family

Mackay, Idaho was named for Clarence Hungerford Mackay, the son of John and Louise Hungerford Bryant Mackay. The Mackay's never lived in Mackay, Idaho, but were honored with the name sake by Wayne Darlington, a renowned engineer and superintendent of mining activity for White Knob Mining Company. Clarence H. Mackay made the investments in the mine above Mackay, Idaho with his father's, John W. Mackay,  mining and transaltantic cable fortune. Father, John W. Mackay died in 1902, just one (1) year after Mackay, Idaho was founded in 1901. John and Louise Mackay's oldest son, John William "Willie" Mackay died in  France in 1895. Clarence H. Mackay died in 1938. No evidence exists that John Mackay was EVER in Mackay, Idaho.
