WINNEUCCA — A local woman was killed today (Tuesday, Sept. 4) on
Interstate 80 after her vehicle left the roadway, traveled down a steep
embankment, then overturned. The accident occurred near milemarker
181, just five miles east of the primary Winnemucca exit.
The woman was identified as Jenette Gleason, 59, of Winnemucca.
According to Sgt. Greg Johnson, of the Nevada Highway Patrol, Gleason
was reported as an overdue traveler by her husband earlier in the morning
after she failed to return home on time from a trip to Idaho. A passing
commercial vehicle spotted Gleason's vehicle at the bottom of the
embankment at about 9:45 a.m.
Johnson said from the preliminary investigation it appeared the vehicle
was traveling westbound when it drifted off the south road edge, near the
median, at which time the driver may have over-corrected to the right,
regained the roadway, traveled broadside across both travel lanes,
then left the roadway to the right side (north side). He added the
vehicle traveled all the way to the bottom of the embankment before
 overturning at the bottom.
The accident remains under investigation.
