Blast from the Past - Custer County Sheriff Building History

The present day Custer County Sheriff Building located on the corner of Main Street and Spruce has a long history in Mackay, Idaho.

Originally, way back at the beginning of Mackay founded in 1901, the building was Hendricks General Merchandise Store which later became the first location of the Stacy's Store (in 1919, Stacy's store moved to the Lost River Commercial building on the corner of Main Street and Custer aka Highway 93).

After the Stacy Store move, I'm not sure what the building housed, but at one time a mortuary was located in the building. Then, the building served as Mackay City Hall and later the Custer County offices. Today, the building houses the Custer County Sheriff office.





Blast from the Past - Lost River Commercial Company and Stacy's Store and Department Store

On the corner of Main Street and Custer Street aka Highway 93 where the current day US Bank sits, a huge 2-story building was constructed by J.H.Greene as the Lost River Mercantile Company around 1903. It must have been a fabulous trading post with a wide array of merchandise for home and ranch.

Around the same time as the Lost River Mercantile Company was running a thriving business, Frank A. Stacy opened Stacy's Store on the corner of Main Street and Elm in the former Hendrick's General Merchandise building at the present day location of the Custer County Sheriff's Office.

Frank A. Stacy also offered the Mackay community numerous household and ranching supplies. They also had home delivery via a horse-drawn wagon.

Around 1919, J.H. Greene sold the large 2-story Lost River Mercantile Building to Frank A. Stacy who renamed the building, Stacy's Department Store and moved his Stacy's Store merchandise from his smaller location at the corner of Main Street and Elm to the bigger store.

 Stacy's Department thrived for many years. In the upstairs, they offered dances and even roller skating for the youth of Mackay. Eventually in 1942, Stacy closed the business and it became a Dodge dealership and the dealership for the John Deere Implements.

The building was razed in 1972 - the end of an era~
